Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt

The town of Sharm el Sheikh, located at the southern tip of Sinai, between the Gulf of Suez and Aqaba, is a former Bedouin fishing village that developed under Israeli occupation from 1967 to 1982. Thus the seaside resort of Na'ama Bay was born in the 1980s, north of Sharm el Sheikh, on the desert shores of a magnificent bay. Today, the original Sharm el Sheikh and its touristy satellite, located at a distance of approximately 4 miles, are adjacent for, in this area of desert and close to a rich submarine world, hotels grow like mushrooms. Thus, they have conquered other bays such as Ras Nasrani (further north).
The seaside resort lives according to the rhythm of school holidays of Italians and Germans and, ever increasingly, Scandinavian and French tourists.
The tourist entity formed by Sharm el Sheikh and Na'ama Bay has an airport (located 4 miles north of Na'ama Bay and 9 miles north-east of the centre of Sharm) and a port located to the extreme west of the Bay of Sharm. To the north the desert of Sinai spreads out... Sumptuous!...

Visit Sharm el Sheikh

  • To see

The desert of Sinai... its biblical scenery with arid mountains of sandstone and granite, notched by deep valleys, the wadi against a background of azure sky. A magical setting for a camel ride.

    To do

Ride a camel in the desert, discover the Coloured Canyon with its walls made of layers of various colours by 4x4, visit the monastery of Saint Catherine, climb Mount Sinai and, of course, go scuba diving for a day. The National Park located nearby, one of the most beautiful sea bottom reserves across the globe, is an area placed under special protection. The seabed world around Sharm el Sheikh have other renowned sites: Ras Um Sid, Ras Nasrani or Shark Bay along the coastline, Jackson Reef and Gordon Reef surrounding the islands at the Strait of Tiran. While some sites are directly accessible from the coast, the majority of diving are made from a boat. The region, very windy in winter, attracts lovers of windsurfing and kite surfing. But be careful while kiting when there is a lot of wind... Avoid doing it in these conditions if you are a novice...

    To think about

Remember to buy a submarine camera. The fauna and flora are magnificent in this part of the world.
  • To avoid

Avoid staying in this resort during winter: it is windy and cold. For security reasons with regard to various attacks, we do not advise against tourist sites but it is recommended, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to avoid gatherings and movements of crowds, keep abreast of developments in national and regional situation and regularly consult the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: http://www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/fr/pays-zones-geo_833/egypte_414/conseils-aux-voyageurs_13232/securite_29017.html. The competent authorities have detected several cases of birds infected with H5N1 virus in districts across the area. No human cases have been identified for now. The Directorate General for Public Health recommends that travelers avoid contact with poultry and birds, including not to visit farms or markets of poultry. Follow the general recommendations for hygiene when travelling in developping countries, which aim to protect you from microbial infections: avoid consuming raw or poorly cooked food, especially meat and eggs, regularly wash hands with soap and water or a water-alcohol solution.

    To try

You should taste the mezzes (tasty sauces for dipping bread), foul (mashed beans seasoned with lemon juice, herbs and olive oil), hoummous (cold mashed chickpeas with sesame paste oil, stuffed vine leaves, grilled meat, stuffed vegetables, lamb stuffed, leaves of brick, watermelon, dates, baklawas, dried apricots... As for the drinks, you can enjoy the karkadé, Egyptian wine or tea with mint...

    To bring back

You can buy souvenirs such as djellabas, tunics, embroidered cotton shirts (cotton is very cheap), sequined oriental dancing costumes, papyrus, babouches, Bedouin jewelry, boxes inscrusted with pearls, sandals, glassware and ceramicware, copperware, perfume bottles, Egyptian music and spices, ashtrays made of alabaster...
