Airports
Malabo's Santa Isabel international airport is located 4 miles away from the centre of town. Taxis are available for a ride cost of about £5.50.

Security
It is recommended that tourists do not go out at nightfall and that they avoid travelling around Bioko island.
Many assaults have been reported in Malabo over the last few months.
In general, for trips outside of Malabo and Bata, it is preferable to have a local person to accompany you.

Languages
Spanish is the official language, but each ethnic group speaks its own dialect (Fang, Bubi, Fernandino creole).

Requirements
Former visas, even if valid, are no longer accepted upon arrival in Malabo or Bata.
A passport valid for at least three 3 months is required. A visa is mandatory; it is issued in 48 hours, valid for 30 days (available from the embassy). You must bring: 2 photos, 1 form to fill in and an invitation letter or a return ticket or one leaving for another destination. Remember to bring an identity photo that will be requested by the customs upon arrival into the national territory.

85% are Catholic and 15% Animist.

Currency
The currency is the CFA franc (XAF), which consists of 100 centimes.
£1 Sterling = 730 XAF. Only two banks, one in Malabo and the other in Bata, offer a currency exchange service. The English pound can also be easily exchanged here, although this is not necessarily the case for other currencies. Credit cards are not accepted and travellers cheques are not recommended. There is no limit on the import and export of currencies, but you will need to declare it. The export of CFA Francs is limited to 50,000 CFA. Bank opening hours: 8:00am to 12:00pm, Monday to Saturday.

Local transportation
By plane: two domestic airline companies connect Malabo to Bata (six flights per week). It is recommended to book beforehand. Flight hours are approximate, but the rates are very inexpensive. Know that aircrafts of domestic airlines have no passenger insurance. The conformity with IATA regulations should be carried out in the coming months.
Others: bush taxis link the different places of Bioco island. Minibuses provide connections between Bata, Acalayong and Ebebiyin with some other cities in Cameroon and Gabon.
As for now, the country does not have any car rental agency.
Police or military roadblocks are set up at the exit of cities and can be seen a little everywhere on the roads, their aim is to check passengers in vehicles. The road infrastructure is in really poor condition. Car insurance is not obligatory; showing how prudent you need to be.

Health
Vaccination against yellow fever is required. Recommended vaccinations: diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, and hepatitis A. An anti-malaria treatment is strongly recommended, the country is listed in zone 3.
Do not swim in stagnant water and only drink sterilised or bottled water (with the cap taken off in front of you).
Do not eat raw or half-cooked food (meat, fish, vegetables, fruits...), wash your hands with soap frequently and take all precautions to avoid "traveller's dysentery".
Protect yourself against mosquito bites by wearing long sleeved shirts at night, by not forgetting to apply mosquito repellent products at nightfall and by sleeping with mosquito nets.
There is no reliable and well-equipped hospital structure. In case of a serious sickness, plan to be evacuated to Douala (Cameroon).

Electricity
220-240 V. An adaptor is not needed.
