Eritrea is an extension of the Ethiopian plateau, surrounded by low plains in the East and the West. The mountainous plateau (as high as 2000 m) is shaped by valleys and rivers. To the West, the plains are covered by an acacia savannah and open forests, slowly descending towards Sudan. To the East, the coastal plains are desert.
