Massawa

Massawa

Massawa Massawa Port, Eritrea The city's architecture was strongly influenced by the Ottoman and Egyptian Empires, and Massawa's port still constitutes one of the biggest ports in the Red Sea. © Bruno Morandi

Massawa is the main city on the coast. It has kept the mark of the Turkish and Egyptian occupations (16th to 18th Century). Badly damaged during the 1990-91 conflicts, the white and pink coral buildings of the city have, most of them, been restored. The islands of Batsa (the old city and the port) and Twalet (Italian architecture) are linked to the main part on the city by dykes. Here you can practise different water sports, scuba diving and underwater fishing. To swim, you should go to the beautiful white sand Gergussum beach.
