With its 11 churches carved in the rock, Lalibela, in the north, is a grandiose site. Scene of the country's biggest religious ceremonies, this cloistered city, located north of Addis-Ababa, is the Jerusalem of Sub-Saharan Africa. Madhane Alem basilica, the most majestic one, has a rectangular shape and has five naves. Due to risks of flood, the site is closed during the rainy season, from late June to early October.
