It's a big, green, film-festival machine and it's seriously committed to sustainable development. This week's event comes to you from Bratislava, Slovakia's flourishing capital, and promises to be the biggest and most educational event of its kind.
The 39th Ekotopfilm Festival is set to open its doors to the worldwide public from 15-19 October. Though organisers are yet to release the final lineup, some of the hottest environmental film releases of the year are, if previous lineups are anything to go by, sure to be on the cards. Recent years have featured entries from the world over - the UK, USA, Czech Republic and Iran to name just a few (expected and unexpected) participating nations.
The aim of the film festival is to promote the increasingly urgent need to protect the environment and to encourage sustainable development by sharing the latest and best projects from the world of film. All entries are required to meet certain criteria and, most importantly, to promote the festival's purpose of environmental education.
The entries are split into categories before being judged and prizes awarded. Amongst them are Nature and Natural Science - assessing films about new technologies and solutions to the problems presented by environmental change - and Current Affairs, focusing on the hottest environmental topics of the moment and giving them an international audience.
Entrance to the festival is usually free, with screenings open to the public as well as some for primary and secondary school pupils. These student screenings focus on getting young people involved in, as well as learning about, the impacts of their actions on the environment around them.
The festival's message may be an oft-repeated one, but the fact remains that environmental change is one of the most pressing issues facing us today and this festival offers one of the best and most engaging ways to start heading towards saving our planet for future generations.
