After artists like Takashi Murakami, Xavier Veilhan and Jeff Koons, the Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos is showcasing her work at the iconic Château de Versailles, south of Paris.
With over 16 sculptures and installations on show throughout the château's royal apartments and gardens, Vasconcelos is inspired by Marie-Antoinette's exuberant and grandiose world.
Blue Champagne (2012), an installation of blue lights jutting out of the garden fountains, and the Vitrail (2012), bizarrely remind the viewer of a period too far back to have actually existed - one of sheer audacity, utter decadence and pure hedonism. In the emblematic Palais des Glaces, works like Marilyn (PA - 2011), an enormous pair of court shoes made out of stainless steel cooking pots and lids, perfectly illustrate the oversized ego of the time as well as the exaggerated focus on appearance and beauty. On a more serious note, works like Coraçao Independente Vermelho (2005), a large tangle of red chains and plastic sonorous heart hanging from the ceiling of the Salon de la Paix, recalls the passion and drama of the time.
Joana Vasconcelos at Versailles, curated by Jean-François Chougnet, will run until 30 September 2012
