Renowned for its gay-scene, San Francisco's Pride festival is the largest annual celebration on the city's social calendar and will be taking place on 23-24 June 2012. The official name of the event is the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender Pride Celebration Parade and it not only commemorates gay and lesbian communities in the bay and beyond, but also acts as the largest fundraising day of the year for the gay community.
The parade takes place on Market Street and is an explosion of blinding colour. Locals dance in the streets dressed up in fancy dress making up one of the largest street parties in the city.
The parade itinerary starts at Market and Second Street and travels to the Civic Center, the final celebration site. The parade consists of over 200 bands and floats.
You can watch the parade for free along Market Street but if you want to get more serious about the action, there is grandstand seating is available on UN Plaza (between 7th and 8th).
Pride celebrations take place at the Civic Centre, where free stages are se up for music and various other shows.
