In the area of the diamond sellers, at 59 West 44th Street, between the Avenue of the Americas (6th Avenue) and 5th Avenue. Close to the Empire State Building, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Rockfeller Centre. The hotel is 17 miles from La Guardia airport, 16 miles from JFK, and 17 miles from Newark. It is located near metro lines B, D, Q, and S.

The Algonquin's past - a historic monument of New York - is closely related to the American literary, and theatrical history of the 20th century. Since the early 1900's, the famous "Round Table" of the hotel has welcomed many important people, writers and famous literary critics: Douglas Fairbanks, Gertrude Stein, Simone de Beauvoir, William Faulkner, just to mention a few. Still today, many literary awards are presented there. From the beginning, the hotel has had a cat for a mascot: the last one was named Mathilda. The Algonquin program in the Oak Room cabaret evenings from Thursday to Saturday. As well as baby-sitting, there is a dog-sitting service (caring for the animals) offered, upon request.

7.5/10

Built in 1902, renovated in 1999, the Algonquin offers its guests an intimate and muffled atmosphere, excellent for relaxation. In the lobby, as in the dining room in the back, the perfectly fancy decor respects the historical vocation of the hotel: classic furniture from 1902, warm panelling, velvet fabrics and diffused lighting. Everywhere in the hotel, details evoke literature, for example the "one-liners" that are written on cards on the door of each room or at each table setting in the restaurant. The building, behind a beautiful limestone and brick façade, houses 165 rooms and suites, 64 non-smoking and 9 adapted for the handicapped. The hotel has a fitness room that is small, but quite well-equipped for a hotel of this category.

7/10

Of adequate size, without being very large, the rooms at the Algonquin have been decorated carefully, in an American turn of the century style. They are warm, and have a satisfactory level of features: air conditioning, television (42 channels, with the movie channel), alarm radio, telephone with answering machine, as well as a dressing area with ironing table and iron. The bathrooms are small, with only a shower, but they are still quite functional and have charming decor. Room service is not offered 24 h a day - only from 7 AM to 10:30 PM.

7/10

You can refresh yourself, sip cocktails, tea or coffee from noon to 12:30 AM (1:30 AM on Fridays and Saturdays) in a beautiful room that accommodates 85 people and is recessed from the Lobby. The same kind of service is available at the Blue Bar, an American pub with a warm, and relaxed atmosphere, accessible from the lobby or from 44th Street. To the left of the lobby, behind the Blue Bar, the superb Oak Room hosts, all week long, cabaret dinners, public readings, and musicals famous in the entire city. The decor is very cosy, and the food is good. Service starts at 7 PM sharp, the curtain goes up at 9 PM. Fridays and Saturdays; a second service starts at 10:30 PM, with a show at 11:30 PM. You don't have to be a guest of the hotel to be present, but it will cost you $ 50 /for a meal, and $ 50 more for the show (the meal is not mandatory).
