Pushkar camel fair, India 02/09/2011

An astonishing 50,000 camels converge on the tiny desert town of Pushkar, in India's state of Rajasthan, for the annual Pushkar Fair. It's a fascinating and peculiar sight, and a great opportunity to witness an old traditional style Indian festival. The original intention behind the Pushkar Camel Fair was to attract local camel and cattle traders to do business during the holy Kartik Purnima festival,

Located 161 miles to the north-east of Delhi, 3,280 feet up in the Himalayas, the Ananda Spa is only accessible by road, or by air, for the lucky few. By car, you stop in Richikech, 11 miles from the hotel, and by train (4h20 from Delhi) you stop in Haridwar, a town located 22 miles from the Ananda Spa. Once in Richikech, take a taxi, or inform the hotel, which will send a car to pick you up, although that is the more expensive option.

The spa was named best spa in the world in 2005.
Many celebrities come to recharge their batteries in this luxurious and highly trendy place.

Although the welcome is in a palace, the rooms are more remote. You get there in an electric car along a small track, or by foot, if you are sporty. The rooms are housed in a 5-storey building, and you enter on the 5th floor. Yes, you are in the mountains! The rooms overlook the Ganges valley or the Himalayas. The higher up you are, the better the view. A pool, golf course and large spa form the core facilities of the hotel, which is set in wild nature.

SPA
It has its own building. A haven of peace opens up to the residents. The welcome and the atmosphere are impeccable, and the staff are always on hand for the (sometimes very demanding) clientele. A relaxing experience. There are two spaces: one for men, one for women, with Jacuzzi, sauna, hammam, pool and relaxation area facing the Ganges valley. Upstairs there is a large gymnastics room and, in one corner, a beauty salon where you can let your feet, nails and hands be pampered. The long corridors contain several massage booths. All have large windows overlooking vegetation and are very tastefully decorated. On offer are Thai massages, body scrubs, ayurvedic and European treatments, for couples or individuals, as well as hydrotherapy and jet room. In the midst of the corridors, a musician plays the flute - as if the massages were not enough on their own!

The 76 rooms are spacious and fitted with a walk-in closet, a bathroom with bath and shower, and a large balcony. In the wardrobe, there is an outfit consisting of a long shirt and white trousers, which can be used by the residents during their stay. This comfortable set of clothes is worn by most clients during meals, but also for going for walks, which makes the Ananda seem like something of a sect. In the bathroom, the bath is placed in front of a bay window so that you can admire the superb view over the Ganges valley while enjoying a relaxing soak in the bath. To help you get those emotions back in balance, there is a well-stocked minibar and a DVD player for cinephiles.

The restaurant, one part of which is indoors while the other is on a wooden terrace up in the treetops, provides refined cuisine. The residents always have the option to take calory-free meals, while those who enjoy their food but are watching their figure can see from the menu how many calories are in each dish. Meals are offered a la carte or as part of a buffet, and the choice and quality of the food means we recommend the buffet, copious, allowing you to alternate international and Indian cuisines.
