Review: Anezi Hotel

Located more than 985 feet from the beach, Anezi is a hotel that has not aged well. The architecture and the decoration are outdated. The infrastructure is also rather outdated, this is why various renovations are scheduled for 2008. This building, the highest in the entire seaside resort, has undeniably one distinct asset : the panoramic view from the 10th floor.

The Kamal hotel is an unpretentious establishment. It has no garden, no sports activities, no animation ...

Perched on the edge of the very busy Mohamed V Avenue, the Anezi lies on the road to Essaouira next to the hotel Kenzi Europa. Given its location on the hillside, it offers a beautiful view across the city and the beach of Agadir. The city centre and, on the other side, the beach, are located both within 10 minutes on foot. It takes about 20 minutes by car to reach the international airport of Agadir.

Like the Club Med, money does not circulate in the hotel, and customers receive a card at the beginning of their stay, which covers all of their purchases. Like the animation team composed of 9 people in low season and up to 14 people in the summer, the hotel's clientele is international. Every evening, a performance is organised for guests. In addition, Internet access is free, however, there is only one computer available at the business center. Four cars are offered to take customers to the casino , the beach or even to the centre of town for free.

Dating back to 1985, the Anezi hotel has old-fashioned architecture, that has really aged as time has passed. The hotel consists of a large, white, 10-storey building like a tower block. The decoration gives a cold and slightly unwelcoming look to the place. At the reception, all in grey marble and with a low ceiling, a few local artisans are sometimes invited to exhibit their work. Surrounded by a large terrace made of concrete, three swimming pools, side to side and all different sizes (large, medium and small for children) are available for holiday makers. Two of them are heated. At the end of 2008, construction work is planned to renovate and enhance the snack-bar area, which, for the moment, is located below on a section of the terrace. In addition, the lawn gives certain beauty to the place. However, it is too small and the space does not allow for everyone to find a deck chair and rest in peace.
Be aware, that the infrastructures offered as a modest "well-being" area are out-dated : rust in the unlit hamam; strong smell of humidity in the sauna; attractive little cabins and a fitness saloon without any, or almost any equipment... As for the hairdresser's, here again, the facilities are "limited". The renovation couldn't come quicker !
During our visit in February 2008, the kids club anounced that it had not yet been set up. On the area dedicated to children, there are nevertheless some inflatable attractions on offer. It is a pity to note the concentration of dust, large stones on the ground and an obvious lack of supervision.

A total of 245 standard rooms (30 square metres ) and suites (60 to 90 square metres), greet customers in an ambiance reminiscent of the 1970-80s. Sea views are available in 127 of them. We must add another 90 apartments located next to the hotel, half of them renovated in 2006. For those nostalgic of the 1970-80s, the rooms have formica furniture and are carpeted (which can be stained or burned by cigarette butts here and there) and in shades of beige / green. The rooms are equipped with satellite TV (bad reception), an electronic safe (extra cost), telephone, a suitcase, central air conditioning (which like the radio does not work) and a mini bar, all completely degenerated in the suites. The bay windows, without double-glazing, are difficult to open to access the balcony. The darkness of the room may be undermined by large holes in the double curtain. Of average size, the bathrooms have toilets (worn), a bidet and a bathtub, except for one room on each floor which has a shower. Room service is available, except between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Renovation work in the rooms is planned to take place over a period of one year, the earliest is planned to start in March 2008.

4.5/10

The main restaurant serves breakfast (from 5 p.m. to 10 a.m.) and dinner (from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.) in the style of a buffet, in a large, mainly red dining room, illuminated by bay windows from which you can enjoy the sea view. 15 thematic evenings are presented in turn (Italian, French, Asian, etc..), and two Moroccan folkloric evenings for the arrival and depature of customers. Two restaurants serving Moroccan and Italian a la carte allow you to vary your meals. While a Moroccan style seduces you with its comfortable, green sofas and its polished atmosphere with finely wrought ceilings, mural mosaics, the Italian decoration has quita a disconcerting decoration, particularly as regards the combination of colours. On the 10 th floor there is the bar with a panoramic view that as from March will also become a restaurant serving a la carte. Ideal for a drink in the evening and enjoying the view ! A snack-bar beside the swimming pool allows you to dine at midday (from 12 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

You have to cross several streets to arrive at the huge, lively bay of Agadir, located more than 985 feet from the hotel and easily accessible. On the seafront, you will find the Lookéa, the Tafoukt and the Royal Atlas. The Anezi does not have a private beach, however the long and wide beach of the resort itself is large enough for everybody to easily find their own space. The water sports clubs offer sailing, windsurfing, kayaking ... Here as elsewhere on the bay, almost at zero sea level, the sand is fine, golden and regularly cleaned by the city authorities. On the foreshore, a few rocks and large stones should be avoided. Note that the wind blows often in the evening.
