Review: Assouan Oberoï Hotel
Although the services offered by this huge luxury hotel are level to its five stars, its general architecture is not very appealing. However, the vast suspension-garden, the view on the Nile and the desert nearby are major assets of the hotel. Appropriate for families, young couples and business customers.

On the Elephantine Island, which lies opposite to the city of Aswan. Guests have a view on the Nile and, beyond, on the dunes of the desert where you can see the mausoleum of Aga Khan. It takes about five minutes by motor boat from the coast of Aswan. The airport is about 12 miles away (it takes approximately half an hour).
For unknown legal reasons, the panoramic restaurant's tower of the Oberoï (the hotel belongs to a large Indian hotel group) has remained unfinished, as well as the building site of a second hotel (launched by an Asian company), abandoned too, right at the tip of the island of Elephantine. This untimely concreting disfigures the landscape of a sanctuary housing the remains of civilizations dating back to 4,000 B.C. What a pity...

The construction of the current hotel complex had started back in 1981. This large hotel of a Pharaonic size is composed of two concrete buildings: a large horizontal three-level bar and two smaller four-storey bars topped by a tower which reveals a panoramic view, unfortunately not accessible to the public. The entire setting looks like an airport with its control tower (one of the favourite joking subjects among the people of Aswan!), or a block of flats from the 1970's. The reception hall looks like a bank lobby, all in marble. It is rather cold and impersonal. Eight separate villas are built at the rear of the hotel along the Nile. You would note especially the fitting out of the suspension-garden (upstairs there is the mezzanine, just before the first floor). Here there are two pools, the swings for children and a large gym, which has just been renovated.

190 comfortable rooms (between 270 and 320 square feet), all endowed with balconies. The "luxury" ones (30% in overall), located in the large main bar, overlook the Nile and the desert. The other ones, which can be regarded as "standard", overlook the garden or the Nile, on the city of Aswan side (no view on the desert or the mausoleum of Aga Khan). It is pleasant but a bit less romantic. The furniture is simple, functional and traditional. With air conditioning, a direct dial telephone with calls for abroad, a radio, a mini bar, satellite TV. The bathroom is fully furnished, with a bath and a hair dryer, with tinted wood and marble. There is a safe at the front desk. Besides, there are 38 duplex suites with a living room and a private patio. Eight detached villas, on the side of the Nile and the desert, face the botanical garden on the island of Kitchener. They were built in the same style as the hotel, with vast interior space, duplex suites, opening onto a private garden and a large terrace.

Three large restaurants: the Orangerie is a gourmet restaurant where dinner is served at the table and where evening dress is compulsory in the evening (continental, Indian, Italian and Eastern cuisine). The restaurant's style is outspokenly Egyptian, tapestried in red velvet and gold, with red wood classic furniture. La Perla is a small restaurant where you can taste a variety of cooking buffets (Eastern, Italian and Indian cuisine). A snack can also be ordered at the side of the restaurant's pool. There is also a big night club and bar, called Nashwa.
