Review: Bateleur Camp at Kichwa Tembo Hotel
The Bateleur Camp is an upscale version of the Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp. The first is already a success, and the second is even better! This exclusive place is perfect for getting some peace and quiet, as you are practically isolated from everything. The totally intimate facilities allow you to feel quite at home. Great! For romantic holidays spent looking into each others eyes...

Located to the north of the Masai Mara reserve, the camp is around 189 mi from Nairobi. This could seem close, but do not trust appearances; it takes around six hours to get there by road. On the other hand, by air it is only a 35 minute flight. The airfield is not very far from the camp.
The Bateleur Camp organises various excursions: safaris with a guide, meals in the bush and visits to Masai villages. The camp can also organise trips in a hot-air balloon over the reserve, through an external company.
If you decide to go off on a safari before breakfast, you should be aware that you will be served a hot drink on waking in your tent.

The Bateleur Camp is the younger, more upscale version of the Kichwa Tembo. So it opened after the first, in February 2007. Half of the tents are gathered on the plain, and the other half are on a hill. Thus, there are two distinct common areas for each section. As the first is situated higher up, it benefits from a clearer view than the other. However, both sections are decorated in the same safari style. Set under tents, these are real English lounges, with coffee tables and large, comfortable sofas. The small bar on the left is open throughout the day, and guests even have the opportunity to serve themselves.
The hotel's swimming pool is hidden in the garden. This rectangular pool is not very large, but is big enough to do a few lengths of breaststroke. Some deckchairs are dotted around for an afternoon nap or a good sunbathe.

18 tents make up the Bateleur Camp. Nine are situated on the plain; the others are on the hill. They are all constructed in the same way, with beautiful, Ethiopian-inspired decoration. The four poster bed stands in the middle of the room. The beige and chocolate tones make the place refined and luxurious. For those who like to practise sport, a basket with gymnastic equipment is available at the foot of the bed. As for facilities, there is a safe, a fan, a hair dryer and bath robes. There are welcome products in the bathroom, which opens onto the bedroom and is completely made of stone. Outside, the terrace is equipped with two comfortable leather armchairs. Finally, you should be aware that a driver is assigned to each tent, and that he will take you on your safaris.

The two living areas of the camp, the size of nine tents each, have several tables, making up the restaurant. This does not feel like a room designed to be a restaurant but more like a home, and a living area where everyone gets together. Meals are served a la carte, and there is something for everyone. The menu is different every day, and the food here is quite international. If the weather is nice, tables are set on the beautiful outdoor wooden terrace, and dinner is served by candle light. The atmosphere is calm and relaxed. A really pleasant moment, in a nice setting with good food!
