Review: Bristol Hotel

This luxury hotel, which opened in 1892, belongs to the Starwood Hotels group and more specifically The Luxury Collection chain. Along with the Imperial, the Bristol is one of Vienna's most elegant and symbolic hotels, offering a rare and sophisticated insight into Austrian history. It is also a favourite of politicians, artists, and celebrities from all corners of the world, and will particularly appeal to Art Nouveau enthusiasts.

The Bristol boasts a prime location at the very heart of the Ring, where Vienna's best luxury hotels are to be found. It also stands opposite the beautiful National Opera building, just outside the Wien Oper tramway stop.

This is certainly a hotel with a history, starting with its name, which honours the British city of Bristol. From the Prince of Wales to Theodore Roosevelt, the Bristol is the favourite haunt of famous personalities from around the world and has even been featured on the CondeNast Traveller Gold List since 2006.

The Bristol is an elegant luxury hotel where they really do pull out all the stops to cater to guests' every whim, even the most unexpected ones. Renovated in 2008, this establishment is jut brimming with charm. Like many hotels in European capitals, such as the Ritz on the Place Vendôme in Paris, the decor here is very traditional, which only makes the hotel all the more charming and appealing. Those who like to keep an eye on their physique will be pleased to know that there is a very nice gym on the top floor of the hotel, complete with all the latest technology in body-building, weight-lifting, and leg, torso, and abdominal toning.

The hotel has a total of 140 guest rooms, including 18 suites. 48 of the rooms were renovated in 2008 and all of them are checked and maintained regularly. From the classic room to the Prince of Wales suite, you can't help but be in awe with this place. As soon as you set foot inside the door you'll feel you've gone back in time to the enchanting bygone days of the Emperors and Empresses, a wonderfully rich period in history that has become synonymous with luxury. All of guest rooms feature superb sophisticated decor consisting of Calcatta marble and black Maquinia as well as fin de siècle antique items. Even the ceilings are designed in the form of a star. Particular attention has been paid to the beds, which are decked in white linen sheets and topped with luxurious duvets. All of the rooms have broadband Internet access starting from around £17 a day, flat-screen televisions broadcasting a wide range of international channels, and a CD and DVD-player. The bathrooms, meanwhile, are done out entirely in marble and come with gold-plated keys. Very comfortable bathrobes and white slippers are also provided.

When it comes to dining, the hotel offers two options. The first is the restaurant, the Korso, which has won various awards and is renowned for being one of the best in Europe. The decor here is majestic and impressive, from the glass candelabras to the fireplace, with wood being the dominant material. The restaurant even boasts a wonderfully lit onyx wall created by architect Paolo Piva. With regards to the cuisine, the menu put together by Christian Krumpholz will prove a real treat for the senses, with a combination of Austrian gastronomy and international cuisine on offer. The restaurant is open from 7:00am to 11:00pm, with breakfast served as a buffet whilst lunch and dinner are served à la carte. If you're not really that hungry, you might prefer to grab a club sandwich or a very tasty quick snack from the Bristol's sumptuous bar, one of the oldest American bars in the city. The decor here is an impressive combination of works of art, clever lighting, and wall-mounted candelabras.
