Review: Candies Hotel
Candies Hostel is located in Malé and is more of a backpackers' stopover than anything resembling the luxurious hotels associated with the destination. But Candies is not trying to be anything more than clean and practical for a night or two. Small with only sixteen rooms and located in a backstreet of the city, it is very quiet. The owner has tried to make it a little more pleasant by adding a terrace of potted plants and a small pool, which are definite highlights here. Candies is a good inexpensive choice for tourists wanting to spend a night in the capital or to be close to the airport for an early/late flight. The hostel is also a good spot to explore the capital from without spending too much.
Advantages
- Cheap rates.
- Great location from which to explore the capital.
- Pleasant enough for a short stopover.
- Quiet.
- Pleasant outdoor terrace and pool.

- Extremely basic.
- Food is not of good value.
Price and availability of the Hotel
Candies Hostel is situated in a quiet backstreet, in Dheefuram Gholhi Street in the centre of the Maldivian capital, Malé. From the airport is can be accessed via dhoni (traditional Maldivian boat) from Hulhule Island (the airport island). It is only a 10 minute journey away. Malé is only 3mi.˛ but is extremely dense. There isn't too much to do or see here in the way of sightseeing, but as Maldivian culture is so scarce on hotel islands, spending a night here is a good way of mingling with the locals. A day is enough to explore the capital.
Open in 2004, this small hostel is usually used by tourists for a night or two after a late arrival into the Maldives or an early or late departure as it is located in Malé which is a short dhoni ride away from the airport. Some tourists like to have a night in the Maldivian capital to explore real Maldivian culture. The rates here are inexpensive; around $90 per night for a double, making it a good choice just for a night. Wireless internet access is free in the rather shabby lobby area and around the pool.
As the hostel is in the capital, there is no beach here.

Candies Hostel is a tiny hotel located right in the heart of the small capital. Found in a small backstreet, the hostel is entered via a terrace of potted plants. The terrace is also the hostel's eating area. The reception is to the right inside the building and there is a small pool with a narrow sunning area. For a quick refreshing dip, this is ideal; however there are more pleasant places to spend a day sunbathing, especially in the Maldives. In terms of décor, there isn't really any particular style. It is basic if not a little drab and could do with a facelift.
The hostel is spread over two floors. Most guests tend to wander around town whilst staying here.

There are 16 rooms, each with its own bathroom. All rooms have air-conditioning and ceiling fans, as well as a small television. In the way of décor, it is extremely basic although clean. The furniture is inexpensive and chipped. The rooms are bright due to the large windows. When guests are splashing round in the pool, the noise is audible in the rooms, so for guests wishing to get some peace and quiet, cross your fingers that you won't cross paths with noisy bathers. The four front rooms line the balcony above the pool. The rest of the rooms are located to the back of the building. Guests are authorised to smoke in the rooms.
The rooms, although all are en suite, have very small bathrooms and nothing much in terms of bathroom products. Towels are provided though.
It is possible to rent a single, double or twin room. As space is an issue in this tiny capital, the rooms in the city hotels tend to be on the smaller side which is especially true of Candies.

There is one restaurant where the eating area is on the outdoor terrace. The menu comprises of a range of international food but prices tend to be a little expensive in comparison to eating out in the city.
