Review: Laïco Hotel l'Amitié Hotel

A symbol of the friendship between Mali and Egypt, this 16-floor hotel at the heart of Bamako is surrounded by vast, lush grounds, offering golfers the opportunity to indulge in their favourite pastime. As you would expect from the capital's largest hotel, and one which has long boasted unique 5-star status, the swimming pool is (undoubtedly) the largest in Bamako, and as well as offering Western-style comforts, it is immensely spacious and offers a wide variety of leisure and dining options. Basically, this is as close as you will get to spending your holidays in the Malian capital without feeling homesick!

Festival au Desert, Mali 29/12/2011

One of the most special music festivals in the world for its location and vibe, the Festival au Desert is back for the 12th time. Taking place in Essakane, after having moved around for the first few years of the festival's existence, with stints in Tin Essako and Tessalit, the event is a gathering of 30 or so artists from around Mali, the rest of Africa and a few from the rest of the world. The Amitié is located right at the heart of the Malian capital, not far from the Niger River and adjacent to the embassies and the large market. Bamako International Airport is just under 11 mi from the hotel but you should allow 30 minutes' transfer time by car, due to the many traffic jams around the city!

The Amitié Hotel had long been a Sofitel establishment before it was taken over by the Libyan Group Laïco in 2007. The communal areas and guest rooms here all have Wi-Fi. A free shuttle service operates between the hotel and Bamako International Airport.
Getting to the Country Club golf course can prove dangerous, as you have to cross the fairway to get to it!
The Amitié hotel is often popular for large receptions due to the size of the property and its conference rooms.

Accommodation tip:
Book a room on a higher floor if you can, as these offer views over the capital and the Niger River.

7.5/10

Located next to one of Bamako's biggest arterial roads, this large, Western-style building offers a wide variety of services and the comfort you would expect of a hotel of this standard, which is just what you need after a tour round Mali! The large lobby sets the tone, with modern decor and spacious, comfortable surroundings. Three lifts lead up to the hotel's 191 guest rooms and fitness club. On the garden side of the building lies the largest lagoon pool in the Malian capital, along with a smaller pool for children and everything that you need to relax in the sun - there's even a place where you can grab a bite to eat. It's just a shame that its tiled flooring lets it down in terms of charm. Following the walkways you will eventually come to the hotel's 9-hole golf course, set amid some of the nicest grounds that you will find in this traffic-choked city centre. Peace and quiet is guaranteed here by the high walls that surround this immense wooded property, although the fairway areas are not very well marked out so accidents can easily occur, particularly when trying to reach the small country club.

The 191 large guest rooms at the Amitié all enjoy large bay windows and overlook the property's sprawling grounds and swimming pool. All rooms feature identical decor in shades of yellow (carpets and walls) and they are clean, comfortable and simple, with wooden furniture, a sofa and a mirror. Amenities include a television, air-conditioning, a minibar, a safe and a direct telephone line. As for the bathrooms, they have a bathtub, a washbasin, Roger Gallet hospitality products, an illuminated mirror and a hair-dryer. Room service is also available 24-hours a day.

The very spacious 'La Table du Chef' restaurant is located just beyond the reception. The high-ceilinged, rectangular, salmon-coloured restaurant has air-conditioning and large bay windows overlooking the gardens. It serves international cuisine including three African specialities, three fish and shellfish dishes, three poultry and red meat dishes and three pasta dishes. Breakfast is served from 6:30am to 10:00am, lunch from 12:00am to 3:00pm and dinner from 6:00pm to 11:00pm. The pool restaurant, the Djoliba, is also open at lunchtime and serves a selection of grilled dishes, pizzas and local dishes, whilst an international buffet is laid out here on Sundays. The hotel also has a number of bars, including the one in the reception, which is ideal for business meetings or for relaxing with a drink on the comfortable sofas. Just like the reception itself, this bar, with its high ceiling, is spacious and pleasant - perfect for relaxing! Alternatively, you may prefer to head to the pool bar, or the bar at the country club, amid lush green vegetation.
