Review: Le Caspien Hotel

This establishment can be summed up as a small, charmless hotel suited to small budgets. It is a good option for young people, students and others looking for a cheaper place to stay.

The Caspien is in the Guéliz district, in a small and very peaceful alleyway not far from Place du 16 Novembre. Djemaa el Fna square is just a few minutes away by taxi.

5.5/10

The Caspien is a small, 6-storey city hotel with no particular charm. The rather gloomy lobby does not have any particular decorative features worth mentioning and is not very welcoming. There is a swimming pool, but it is hemmed in between the walls of several buildings, and doesn't get much sun. There aren't any deckchairs next to the pool, either. There is a bar, but it is not the most welcoming of places.

To our great surprise, we actually found the 36 guest rooms to be much nicer than the rest of the hotel. They may be decorated in a basic fashion, but they are homely, modern and clean. There is zellige tiling on the floor, for example, and the walls are in the shade of ochre typical of Marrakech. There is also a lot of wood in the decor, along with forged iron chandeliers and little alcoves. The bathrooms are small but decorated attractively, and you can choose between a shower or a bathtub. Some of the rooms have a balcony. The rooms are provided with air-conditioning, a safe, a television and a telephone.

There are two restaurants for guests to choose between. The first of these is a bistro-style eatery on the ground floor, where guests can take breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast and lunch are served as a buffet, while dinner can be chosen à la carte or from the set menu. There is nothing special about the decor in here. The second restaurant only opens in the evening, in a small dining room. Here, the food basically consists of Moroccan dishes. We might as well tell you now, the Caspien is not somewhere to come for the quality of the food.
