Review: Lodge The Motse Hotel

Like the Tarkuni, its neighbour in the Tswalu private game reserve, The Motse lodge bears the renowned 'Relais & Châteaux' label. The most recent renovations were carried out in 2008, and most of the guests checking in here are English, although South Africans visit too. Thanks to the 'luxury' atmosphere of the place and its tastefully decorated facilities, it does not take long to start feeling at home in the infinitely vast surroundings of the South African savannah.

Wavescape Film Festival, Cape Town 11/12/2011

As the big chill comes to the UK, summer comes to South Africa! As does the Wavescape Film Festival; a surf film festival in Cape Town that aims to educate people about the global plight of sharks. Between the 11 and 19 December, a selection of films and documentaries will be screened at various cinemas throughout the city, including a giant screen at Clifton 4th Beach. One of the films generating

The Motse is located in the Tswalu private game reserve, which is an hour and a half's flight from Johannesburg. On landing, it takes about another hour to reach the hotel in the middle of the savannah. The reserve's other hotel, the Tarkuni, is a half-hour drive along the track.

If you are hoping to take a trip in a hot-air balloon, an experience which we would strongly recommend, remember to book in advance because the external agency that provides this service is based far away in the city of Johannesburg, a 9-hour drive from the reserve. There is no need to worry about traffic jams once you are in the reserve though, as it has six vehicles with a total capacity of thirty people, which is plenty!

The Motse was designed as a luxury African lodge, and is up there with the best of them! The location is peaceful, and you will feel far removed from the hustle-and-bustle of the city out here in the tranquillity of the savannah. The communal areas of the lodge are designed like a residential hotel, with a large lounge area, an impressive dining room and a small upstairs workshop in the main building. Outside, there is a fine terrace where you can linger and take in the unobstructed view of the savannah and the odd animal roaming nearby, or cool down in the round swimming pool just opposite. There are a few deckchairs to laze about in under the sun, but sunscreen is an absolute must!

The Motse's eight rooms are housed in small bungalows, and with a maximum of 20 guests staying at any given time, you are sure to have peace and quiet! All the rooms are large enough to sleep several guests, and are provided with a safe, air-conditioning, a terrace, hospitality products, a hair-dryer, a minibar, etc. On one side of the room is the large four-poster bed with a mosquito net, and on the other an office space that can be converted into a play area for children. As for the bathroom, it contains a nice bathtub, an indoor shower and even a large outdoor shower so that you can enjoy the view as you freshen up! There is no television, but you are unlikely to miss it here.

Meals are served as a buffet at the lodge, but there is also an 'a la carte' menu, and guests can choose to eat either inside in the dining room, or outside in the shade of a pergola. It is common practise to have a hot drink and a few dry biscuits before heading off on safari, and there is a buffet breakfast waiting for you on your return. It is not a huge spread, but hot dishes like scrambled eggs are on the menu. Lunch is a light affair, but at dinner, local meat and fish are prepared, and there is no doubting the good, refined quality of the cuisine.
