Review: Palm Hotel et Spa Hotel
The brand new and very beautiful Palm Hotel and Spa is Reunion Island's new place to be. Perched overlooking the sea, it has all the style and uncluttered surroundings you would expect of a luxury hotel, the only downsides being that it is not right on the seafront and that it is best suited to a trendy, rather upmarket clientele. In a nutshell, this is certainly not the best place for families looking for a cool, no frills place to spend their holiday.

The hotel is located in Grand Anse, in the south of the island. The airport is at least an hour and a half's drive away, either taking the very pretty road that runs alongside the volcano or cutting through the middle, which is also beautiful but a little long. Of course, you could always take the new road on the western side of the island, which would get you there faster, but the scenery along this route leaves a lot to be desired.
The hotel has its own heliport (and trips are organised)
Free activities are organised for guests every day, including excursions, tasting sessions, walks, etc.
On the 3rd Thursday of the month a gourmet night is held in the company of the sommelier and the head chef, who will explain the dishes to you, go through the choice of wine, etc.
Guests staying in the lodges have free access to the spa.
A courtesy room is available for guests who have checked out but who are not catching their flight until the evening, so they have somewhere to leave their belongings, take a shower and change after an afternoon at the pool.

This brand new, very beautiful hotel opened in April 2007, becoming Reunion Island's fifth 4 star hotel. The owners, an architect and an interior designer, really have created a masterpiece here. This becomes clear as soon as you enter the attractive reception area, set under a wonderful wooden framework and open to the outside via a series of louvered shutters. Given the waiting time on busier days, you'll have plenty of time to admire this charming room. If you really want to be impressed, though, you just have to step outside. The hotel's 2 infinity pools, one of which is heated, are built one above the other, and appear to flow right into the ocean, creating a vast blue horizon. These huge pools are perfect for paddling, swimming lengths, or even enjoying a massage under the waterfall, without ever having to disturb anyone. Children also have their own pool located in a small garden next to the adult pool. All of the pools enjoy a spectacular setting at the heart of the hotel's vast palm-planted grounds, surrounded on all sides by terraces and gardens that are perfect for basking in the sun. A little further along, a series of walkways lead off to the villas housing the guest rooms. The hotel offers many facilities, so it won't feel as though guests are stepping on each other's toes. Underneath the restaurant and the bar, for example, you'll find a gym, several conference rooms, and even a games room, all of which are pleasant enough but a little dark and isolated.
Last but not least is the stylish but friendly little spa, which is very popular among both guests at the hotel and locals, perhaps because of the very charming and 'Zen' inner courtyard it conceals. The materials used here are 100% natural and relaxation comes in various forms, from the hammam, mineral massage facility, and jacuzzi, to the extensive treatment list.

There are a total of 65 guest rooms spread out in a park of many acres. A few suites overlooking the sea are totally independent from the rest of the rooms, clustered in various buildings where the view and proximity to the pool vary depending on their category level. The very pleasant standard rooms, featuring chic decor consisting of dark wood and one coloured wall, are housed in 2 buildings located just by the entrance of the hotel. Some of the rooms even overlook the car park and the nearby road. This is a little shocking, seeing as how if you book a standard room in a 4 star hotel, you would hope for a slightly better location than this! Apart from that, the amenities are second to none: bathrobes in the bathrooms, numerous products, a flat screen TV, a safe, a bathtub, slippers, and a wide range of hospitality products - nothing is missing. Much to the delight of the ladies, an umbrella is also provided, though hopefully you won't need to use it! The small terraces in the rooms are not the most private, but certainly serve their purpose.
In the 12 Deluxe rooms housed in 3 villas, the lounge area is more spacious and all of the guests have the added luxury of their own cupboard! They are also set in more pleasant surroundings, with the swimming pools just a few feet away.
If you really feel like splashing out, book one of the suites, which have a floor area of over 100m² and a terrace complete with a jacuzzi overlooking the ocean, a large lounge area with a huge flat screen television, and an espresso machine next to the mini bar... you'll feel like a film star here!

The main restaurant consists of a room with a beautiful wooden framework overhead and is furnished with stylish and original stone and wooden tables. It also boasts a large teak terrace overlooking the sea and the peak of the Grande Anse. Not only that, this is where you will find the bar. Breakfast is served as a generous and varied buffet including a range of pastries and fruit, whilst lunch is best chosen from the wide range of à la carte dishes, although the prices are rather high.
If you are staying here on a half-board basis, dinner will consist of a set menu. Otherwise, choose from the wide variety of sophisticated dishes on offer. If you really want to treat yourself one night, book a table in the gourmet restaurant, renowned for the quality and originality of the cuisine prepared by its chef, as well as for its wine cellar! The cosy, glass-fronted room overlooking the sea can only accommodate 25 guests at a time, and space on the terrace is also a little tight.

A forest path leads down to Grand Anse beach, which is renowned in the area for being very pleasant, and whilst it will only take 15 minutes to get there, the walk back up is more like 25 minutes. Bathing is prohibited here due to the currents, but rocks have been arranged to form a pool in which you can safely take a dip. A return shuttle service runs between the hotel and the beach 3 times a day, at 11:00am, 3:00pm, and 5:30pm.
