Review: Relax Inn Hotel

The Relax inn, built in 1992 has since renovated its rooms but although they boast some lovely views of the surrounding waters, the décor leaves to be desired. However, the hotel is well-located for exploring the capital. The rates are fairly cheap so it can be a good option for a very short stopover in the case of a late/early flight as it is only a short dhoni (traditional Maldivian boat) ride away from Hulhule, the airport island. Although there is a restaurant, which is practical, guests tend to roam around the city for something more traditional and of better value. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful.

The Relax Inn is located right in the heart of Malé in a quiet street, Ameeru Ahmed Magu, to the West of the island.

The Relax Inn comprises of two buildings, two towers standing side by side which are linked on the ground and sixth floors. None of the buildings in Malé are taller than 13 floors, but at just six floors for the original building and ten for the new building, the Relax Inn still manages to have some great views looking out to the bright blue waters surrounding the capital island. There is a lot of activity surrounding the capital's waters so do not expect to find an idyllic view as those on the hotel islands. However the view is a welcome break after a day out in the capital. The staff also speaking fairly good English; the reception manager is completely fluent.

The entrance gives out onto the street. The reception desk is to the right, where you will find friendly and helpful staff to help you. To the left is the rest of the reception area with comfortable seating. Opposite the entrance is the lift taking guests up to the rooms and to the restaurant.

The hotel is made up of two towers - the first, of six floors, was built in 1992 and the second, of 10 floors, was erected just two years ago. The towers are linked via the ground and sixth floor.

As the hotel is located in Malé, there is no beach here. There is neither pool nor gym here.

The rooms at the Relax Inn have been renovated during the last couple of years, so the furniture looks a little less garish, but truth be said, it is far from being a five star establishment. In total there are thirty-six rooms split into four categories: Standard, Deluxe, Executive and Suites. The rooms are still very basic and despite the renovation are a little on the drab side although they are clean and the crisp white bed linen helps to brighten up the rooms. The Standard rooms are particularly small and dark with a very small bathroom. The furniture is kept to a minimum. Towels are provided but there are no toiletries. The Deluxe is a little more generous in size with a flat screen television. There are complimentary tea and coffee making facilities. The two suites overlook Malé and have pleasant views of the sea. The Triple executive rooms are the largest of the categories with lovely views and a balcony. These rooms are bright and light with fairly new furniture although it's no Starck design. The bathroom, although clean is still small and impractical due to there being no real shower cubicle to keep the water away from the rest of the bathroom. The lower-end rooms also have some good views onto the city streets which makes for a change from turquoise ocean views, but are pleasant none the less! There are double, twin and triple rooms available.

There is one restaurant serving ŕ la carte international food. Breakfast is served as a buffet if the hotel is busy. Located on the sixth floor, the restaurant is, although dated in its décor, nice and bright. It also boasts some good views over the city.
