Review: Sentido Neptune Paradise Hotel

The Paradise is one of four hotels belonging to the Sentido Neptune brand, and is a comfortable choice for holidaymakers looking for a decent hotel with a dash of Kenyan sun and sea. Its added advantage is that guests may use the pools and restaurants at the neighbouring Sentido Neptune Village hotel. It shares a large beachfront with its sister hotels Village and Palm, making it an ideal place for families with young children.

Sentido Neptune Paradise is located right next door to the Village and Palm resorts on Mombasa's famed south coast, and is less than a 10 minute drive into the tourist hub of Diani. The Likoni Ferry crossing is about a 30 minute drive away, while Mombasa's Moi International Airport is over an hour's drive from the resort.

Guests staying at the Sentido Neptune Paradise and Village hotels may cross over and use the other hotel's facilities, including restaurants, bars and pools. This policy does not extend however, to the deluxe Palm property. Guests may upgrade to the Palm resort, giving them full access to all three hotels' amenities.

7.5/10

The lovely lobby provides a promising introduction to the hotel; thoughtfully decorated in a local, traditional style, with sculpted wood details, Swahili lanterns, lashings of natural materials and animal prints. While there are some old canoes converted into bookcases and lounge chairs; the centrepiece is surely the beautiful fountain crafted from the trunk of an old baobab tree. Down through the gardens (the star attraction being the enormous Travelling Palm), guests will surely admire the well maintained grounds, awash in tall, shady trees and pretty bougainvillea. Towards the beachfront and at the heart of the hotel is a large free form pool with sunken swim-up bar. A smattering of bamboo sun loungers and straw parasols surround the pool, while there is also a nearby area used for animation activities. On the other side of the bar and restaurant features are the spacious lawns which overlook the beach, providing guests with lots of room to move about.

6.25/10

There are 90 superior rooms at Sentido Neptune Paradise, found throughout a collection of square whitewashed cottages with traditional makuti thatched roofs. Each room is clean and spacious and features a large double bed dressed in crisp white linen, simple throw and scattered in pretty, oriental cushions. Other basic inclusions include a wooden desk, television, fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. Tasteful art adorns the walls and there is also a small terrace. The medium sized bathrooms may not be the most modern but are clean and adequate.

7.5/10

There are two restaurants on site, even if guests may also eat next door at the Village hotel's restaurant. The Olive Kitchen à la carte restaurant overlooks the pool and serves a selection of meat and seafood dishes, with starters priced around 300ksh (£2.40) and mains upwards of 1000ksh (£7.95). The open-air setting, combined with the bright turquoise wicker cane dining settings and fresh blue and white table linen creates a very summery feel. Across a little bridge brings you to the buffet restaurant (local/international cuisine) known as Peponi (it means "uplifted place" in Swahili), a huge space with high ceilings and large glass arched windows that overlook the ocean. The wooden buffet stations are decorated with flowers and objets d'art, while on the exposed brick walls behind them are displayed wall hangings, tapestries and carvings. The colour scheme of maroon and salmon gives the restaurant a cosy feel, despite its size. Next door is a pleasant tea and coffee lounge in a separate gazebo structure known as 'The Deck,' also boasting ocean views. Meanwhile, the main bar is named Mashua - "sailing boat" in Swahili - so called for its, you guessed it, sailing boat setting; complete with carved dolphin bar stools, and sails, buoys, ropes and nets for decoration.

8.5/10

The jewel in the crown at all three south coast Sentido Neptune hotels (Paradise, Village and Palm) is undoubtedly its magnificent beach. Galu Beach boasts a wide stretch of soft, white sand leading to the blue-green waters of the Indian Ocean. It is definitely one of the best beaches on Mombasa coast. There is lots of room to roam about, play a spot of beach volleyball, or to join in the animation activities such as the 'tug of war.' Sun loungers and beach chairs are found within the hotel grounds but not on the beach itself.
