Review: Sofitel Maeva Beach Tahiti Hotel

The Sofitel Maeva Beach will not seduce you at first sight with its massive architecture typical of the 70's and a location too close to the road. But it has a beautiful inside decor which has been the subject of particular attention, namely in the rooms. It also has a beautiful restaurant area and a pool on the edge of the beach. Another asset is the good and relatively affordable food.

The Tiare Tahiti Noa Noa, a friendly little hotel in the town of Papeete, is perfect for a stopover in ...

The hotel is 2.5 miles from the airport (nearly 10 min.) and 6 miles from Papeete (20 min).

Since September 2005 (date of its renovation), the hotel offers a very refined decor enhanced by Pacific traditional craft pieces from a private collection (displayed in the common areas). The hotel offers sauna/hammam packages in Papeete, including transport for "interesting" prices.

7.5/10

From the outside, from the access road, the Maeva Beach Sofitel is not very attractive:a single block building built in 1969 on 7 floors with graded bench extremities (steamship type). The small property is, unfortunately, very close to the very busy road which goes from Papeete to the south. Nothing really attractive at first, even though the impression changes once you arrive in the lobby. You appreciate the very beautiful decoration, both welcoming and plain as well as the seafront area with the pool and the main restaurant. The hotel, with its 214 comfortable rooms and refined setting, is great for a short stay (2/3nights) before flying on to other Polynesian places. Another asset is its very beautiful pool (130 feet by 50 feet) bordered by a large wooden deck and to which you access through a beautiful Bali stone staircase.

7.5/10

Rooms are not large, but with a reasonable size of 237 square feet. The modern decor reminds one a bit of Kenzo's universe: bright colors with several floral motifs. The furniture is beautiful with wooden chairs in braided wood (water hyacinth). On the windows, curtains have prints from passages of a Paul Gauguin's book (Noa-Noa). All roooms have an LCD screen and a very comfortable bedding. Two available categories: "lagoon" and "mountain". Prefer "lagoon" of course (for an extra charge) because of the view and peaceful atmosphere. The "mountain" rooms have a mountain view and also a view of the road; however double glazing guarantees soundproofing. With a twin version or with 6.5 feet "king size" beds, the rooms are very comfortable. Small but very fine bathroom. Beautiful decor, shower ("rain shower" ceiling light and manual showerhead) and "real" hair dryer.

8/10

The hotel has two restaurants. The "Bougainville", the main restaurant, housed in 2 semi-covered spaces (near the pool and the pool-bar). You can have buffet or "à la carte" breakfast, lunch, and dinner here. The menu, with international and Polynesian specialties, changes every day and systematically offers starters, soups, pizzas, pasta, meats and fishes, desserts at reasonable prices (average of ¤18 or £14 per course). Note that the Sofitel schedules 3 shows per week: Polynesian, barbecue and Tahiti oven (ma'a Tahiti). The second restaurant is Japanese, The Teppanyaki, specialized in "cooking show": a Japanese cook shows his know-how to tables of 8 guests (there are only 4 tables, 32 clients maximum). Mandatory reservations, 4 services per night from 6.30pm to 9.30pm.

6.25/10

The Sofitel's beach is not very attractive being of a small size (a few feet long). Except for a beautiful view of Moorea, the environment lacks class on both sides. The beach has deckchairs and sunshades and is covered with coarse sand (white however). The water is crystalline and clean but the bottom is not only made of sand, but aslso of stones and corals. The hotel does not have a nautical club (there is one 490 feet away on the left that offers several activities like snorkeling).
