Review: Villa Soudan Hotel

Facing the Niger river, this is a very pleasant place to stay in Bamako for those who like peaceful and convivial establishments. Despite the simplicity of the place, the charm of this bed and breakfast can mainly be found in its lay-out and upkeep, the choice of materials used and the African sculptures hidden among its vegetation.

The hotel is located in a residential district of Bamako (that of Badalabougou), on the banks of the Niger river and there is a bridge that will take you to the centre of the capital.

The hotel has WiFi, but the connection is rarely good. A (paying) shuttle operates between the hotel and Bamako international airport, but a car is needed to get into the centre of town.

Open in 2007, the Sudan villa with its neo-Sudanese architecture consists of two buildings on either side of the garden. One houses a restaurant and the reception area; the other houses two floors of rooms. The green surroundings are not that big but they are nicely layed out on the banks of the Niger river. The small estate is entered through a large porch that looks out onto one of the more peaceful streets. Far from the hustle and bustle of the centre of the capital, the place is relaxing and has a small swimming pool. There are some bamboo deck chairs facing the Niger river and sofas sheltered by a straw roof. It is the perfect place to sit back and relax. However, access to the river is not possible due to the gates that protect the Sudan villa. The care taken in choosing the local materials (thatch, brick, wood, stones...), the vegetation and the presence of African sculptures is particularly pleasant.

One of the two small alleyways leads to the red, rectangular building in which you will sleep. There are ten rooms spread out over two floors (with a balcony and a terrace) and at the top there are the estate's two apartments. The openwork brick staircase is particularly nice. The rooms are big and clean, but scarcely decorated; they provide the minimum comfort and little else: individual air-conditioning, a fan, a television, a telephone and a minibar. The furniture is very simple and the rooms either include a double bed or twin beds. At night time, the few light fittings in the rooms is regrettable. The shower and tiled bathroom are adequate and decorated in cream and green colours. A soap dispenser is also provided.

Next to the swimming pool and facing the Niger river, a long and narrow straw hut invites guests to come for a drink and a snack at any time of the day. Breakfast is served from 7:30 am to 10:30 am: you have a choice of a continental breakfast (included in the price of the room) or American or British breakfasts (for a supplement). For the other meals, you can choose among around 10 local or international dishes listed on the menu. From 7:00 pm till 11:00 pm, the Sudan villa offers a 'table d'hôtes' with a diverse selection of 7 dishes and 7 starters (on reservation only). On Sundays, a barbecue is organised around the swimming pool.
