Roykstovan (Streymoy)

In Kirkjubour, 8.5 miles South of Thorshavn, visit the Roykstovan museum. This one is situated in a 900 year old farm and re-enacts the inside of a traditional Faroese house. The beams of the main room, as well as the big table have been cut from wood coming from ships that sank near the island. In accordance to the tradition, the farm's roof is covered by grass bush, held up by a birch roof structure. Since the Faroe Islands are almost devoid of trees, the "grass roofs" make good use of natural resources, and at the same time happen to be very insulating. And still today, there are many Faroese mansions grass roofs.
