Airports
Vagar airport is located 35 miles from Thorshavn. A shuttle bus service runs every hour, and will set you back around 100 FOK (£11). The bus rate includes the ferry crossing to Streymoy Island where the capital city is located. A taxi from the airport could cost up to 1,000 FOK (£110).

Security
Do not set off on a hike without being sensibly equipped (hiking shoes and warm clothes). Slopes are steep and often slippery and routes are only marked by piled stones. It is a good idea to have a guide with you for your first hike. Get more information at the Tourist Office.

Languages
Faroese and Danish. English is the most widely spoken foreign language.

Requirements
For European citizens, a valid passport is sufficient.

Religion
Protestants (Lutheran Evangelists 80%).

Currency
The currency is the Faroese Króna (FOK), which is on par with the Danish Krone. Danish cash is accepted everywhere, and the coins are identical - only the notes are different. Credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are accepted in hotels, restaurants and larger stores. There are some ATM machines so you can withdraw cash on site. If you want to exchange cash and travellers cheques in pound sterling, you'll need to visit a bank, open during the week from 9:00am to 4:00pm.

Local transportation
Almost all of the Faroe Islands are served by a regular bus and ferry service. To have access to the whole network, get a 4, 7 or 14-day pass, which can be bought in advance with a tour-operator agency or directly in the country at Thorshavn bus station. To rent a car, you must show your driver's licence. In general, the road conditions are very good.

Health
No particular vaccine is required, but make sure your usual vaccinations are up to date.
