1st century AD: Finnish people arrive in the country that will become Finland.
1323: after two centuries of crusades, Finland is made dukedom by Sweden.
1809: during Napoleonic wars, Finland is detached from Sweden and is integrated into Russia.
1906: founding of a parliamentary institution. Finland is the first European country to give women the right to vote.
1917: following the disturbance of the October Revolution, Finland declares itself an independent state.
1982: Mauno Koivisto, a social-democrat politician, becomes President of the Republic of Finland.
1994: Martti Ahtisaari, a social-democrat politician, is elected President of the Republic of Finland. Finland supports, by a vote of 57%, its membership into the European Union.
February 2000: the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tarja Halonen, is elected President of the Republic with 51.6% of the votes. A Social Democrat, she is the first woman to reach this position in Finland.
30th January 2006: Tarja Halonen is re-elected President of the nation.
