Air Berlin is the second largest German airline after Lufthansa, and the 6th largest in Europe. It was founded in Oregon in 1978 due to the landing ban on all aircrafts not belonging to Allied countries in Germany at the time. The first Air Berlin flight was performed between Berlin and Palma (Majorca) in 1979.Air Berlin's headquarters have been in Berlin since 1991. However, nowadays it has a second base at the airport in Dusseldorf. Today the Air Berlin fleet consists of 126 aircrafts and it is one of the 15 members making up the Oneworld alliance. The Air Berlin route map is extensive, offering flights to destinations throughout Europe as well as several further afield in Africa (mainly North Africa and Kenya), Asia (India, China, Japan etc.), Oceania (Australia, New Zealand etc.) and the Americas (the USA and a few to South America).

The Air Berlin baggage allowance is limited to one or two carry-on bags (depending on flight ticket class): the weight of each bag must not exceed 8kg and must be less than 55x40x20 cm. Passengers can also take a handbag, small backpack or portable computer as cabin baggage. The Air Berlin hold baggage allowance included in the ticket price varies from zero to two bags depending on the fare and service class booked and the flight destination. Additional baggage costs 70 euros (for a mid-haul flight) and 150 euros for a long-haul flight. Passengers will have to pay between 50 and 135 euros per bag for bags weighing more than 23kg.
