History

Meridiana is a lowcost airline along with SkyEurope, Ryanair, EasyJet, and Vueling.

Originally named Alisarda, the airline was founded on 29th March 1963 and funded by prince Karim Aga Khan, with the principal aim of increasing tourism to la Costa Smeralda (the emerald coast) in Sardinia. In 1991 Alisarda changed its name and logo, becoming Meridiana.

Meridiana is the third largest Italian airline, after Alitalia and Air One.

Alliances

In September 2006, Meridiana bought 15% shares of ADF, the company which manages Florence Airport.

In December 2006, Meridiana bought a 29.95% stake in the airline Eurofly, becoming a majority shareholder.

Meridinia also owns a 50% stake in on-line tour operator wokita.com, 79% Units GAESAR (the company that manages Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport) and 50% of the agency "Sami Italy". Meridiana launched its first long-haul flights on 16th November 2007 between Rome (Fiumicino) and New York JFK.
