South African Airlines (Suid-Afrikaanse Lugdiens) is South Africa’s national airline. It was founded in 1934, after the take-over of private company Union Airways. Its headquarters are in Johannesburg. South African Airlines managed to make a full recovery following the difficulties faced by airlines during the apartheid years, when many countries banned the PAC access to their airports. Today this airline is part of the Star Alliance, the largest airline company alliance which counts 26 members in total. The South African Airways route map connects passengers to destinations all over the world and the South African Airways fleet consists of 53 aircrafts. South African Airways domestic flights include, but are not limited to, Abidjan, Nairobi and Dakar; South African Airways international flights land in Europe (London, Frankfurt and Munich), Asia (Hong Kong and Beijing), the USA (New York and Washington) and South America (Sao Paulo).

The South African Airways baggage allowance permits passengers to board with one item of hand luggage for Economy Class, and two items for South African Airways Business Class. This bag must be less than 56x36x23cm in size and weigh less than 8kg. There is no extra charge for hold baggage; however the weight and number of bags allowed varies depending on the flight destination and ticket booking class. Overweight bags incur a surplus fee of between 100 euros and 250 euros again depending on the destination and class.Passengers can complete their South African Airways check in three different ways: using the South African Airways online check in service, using one of the self-service check in kiosks available in some airports, or at the airline's desk in the airport.
