History

The airline Turk Hava Yollari, or Turkish Airlines, is a semi-public Turkish airline which was founded in May 1933 under the name Türkiye Devlet Hava Yollari (DHY). Today the Turkish state owns 49.12% of its shares. Its first international flight took place in 1947 between Relia Ankara and Athens.

Today Turkish Airlines serves 158 cities wordwide, and has a fleet of 133 aircraft (Airbus and Boeing).

Alliances

After creating companies Cyprus Turkish Airlines (1974) and Türk Hava Tasimacilik (1987, domestic flights only), the Turkish airline took part in the creation of the Qualiflyer Group in 1998. This alliance was broken in 2001, when Austrian Airlines and Swissair left the group.

2008 saw the creation of low-cost airline AnadoluJe, and in December of the same year, the airline acquired a 49% stake in Bosnian airline B & H.

Customer services on board

Turkish Airlines has a loyalty program called "Miles & Smiles". Since joining the Star Alliance in 2008, it now also participates in the alliance’s loyalty program, "Miles & More".

Customers can redeem their reward points against reductions on their next flights, upgrades and other services on board.
