Beauport Maritime Abbey, Brittany Milestone on the road to Santiago, this abbey is worth a visit © Mikel Bilbao - age fotostock
The abbey is at the heart of Beauport cove, sheltered by Paimpol bay. Its construction began in1202 and came to an end in the 17th century. At the instigation of Prosper Mérimée, the building was declared an historical monument in 1862.
Situated in beautiful natural surroundings, the abbey (sold as national property during the revolution, then restored in the 19th century by the Morand family) and its coastline have been the property of the Conservatoire du Littoral (French Coastline Conservatory) since 1993. A visit to the abbey, during which you will discover the chaplaincy rooms, the cellar, the dining hall, the ?salles de pressure' (rooms where the monks received gifts from the peasants) and the dukes' house, will give you an idea of the life of the abbey when it was, notably, an important stop off on the St. James' Way pilgrimage.
