Inhabited since prehistoric times, capital of vines and vineyards since antiquity, and witness to the Cathar saga in the Middle Ages, the city of Béziers knows all about pomp and circumstance.
Lulled by the fine climate of the nearby Mediterranean, the local population keep their rich festive traditions very much alive, especially at the 'ferias' and rugby matches. The city is home to several historic churches and is a place to really enjoy the good life, with its wide avenues lined with plane trees, shaded public gardens, the famous Canal du Midi, and a wealth of cultural events centring around cinema, theatre and festivals.
