Bonifacio, France-Corsica

You will not be able to resist the charm of this place, which is very touristic but nonetheless superb. It is not so much the old village as the nature site that we particularly like: breathtaking cliffs battered by the sea on the one side, and a fjord as calm as Olympus where boats are anchored on the other side. Bonifacio owes its name to a 9th century nobleman from Tuscany, the Boniface Marquis. The prized and impregnable fortress which was built there has seen many battles. Pirates, the Genovese, Spaniards and Frenchmen, all fought to conquer the fortress and it was eventually France who inherited it in 1768 when the Treaty of Versailles was signed. Since then, Bonifacio has seen peaceful days.
