Compiègne

Compiègne

Compiègne, which takes its name from the Latin word compendium (meaning 'shortcut'), is located in the east of the Oise department, on the left-bank of the river, at the mouth of the confluence of the Aisne and the Oise.
Having been a royal and later an imperial residence, the city's historical past is closely linked to the history of the kingdom, as evidenced by the many monuments which still stand from this period, such as Saint-Corneille Abbey, the château, and even Saint-Jacques Abbey.
Having changes its name to Marat-sur-Oise during the Revolution, it witnessed many of the events which have shaped the histories of both France and Europe, including the capture of Jeanne d'Arc, the birth of the franc and the signing of the armistices of World War I and, in 1940, the war against Germany. Another of the city's great assets lies in its 35,700 acres of forestland and its 620 mi of pathways, so between hiking, carriage and boat-rides and the many interesting monuments the city has to offer, you'll have everything you need for a very pleasant stay.
