The towns of the north of France attract tourists for their cultural and historical richness and are also only a short hop over the channel. Arras, the capital of the Pas-de-Calais département, boasts fine Dutch architecture; Calais is a busy cross-channel port surrounded by harbours and canals; while Lille, the poster child for the region, is a cultural centre with beautiful museums and a lively atmosphere.
