Located in the east of the Aude administrative region, Narbonne (named after the old Roman colony of Narbo-Martius) looks longingly towards the Mediterranean.
It is some 9 mi from the coast and the seaside resort of Narbonne-Plage. Further west and inland is Carcassonne, followed closely by the Pyrenees and then Spain.
One of Narbonne's strengths is the central status art has long enjoyed in town life, hence the wealth of its current heritage and its nickname 'Ville d'Art' (town of art).
These days, the town is developing its tourist potential, motivated largely by its rich local craft industry, an ideal geographical location, and a civic calendar that is kept full of events all year round.
