Northern Corsica, France-Corsica

Northern Corsica is less frequented than the southern region, yet it offers a multitude of landscapes, beaches, mountains, picturesque villages and fishing ports. Corte in the centre, Bastia to the northeast, and Calvi, Porto and Ile Rousse to the northwest are full of places to visit or are good places to set off from to discover the natural wonders of the land and sea. Those looking to switch off and relax will find what they're looking for here. To the west, you can sunbathe on the beautiful sandy beaches of Calvi, Ile Rousse or Algajola in a setting which has nothing to envy of the beaches south of the island. To the east, south of Bastia, Moriani beach, a strip of sand, is surrounded by a host of hotels and clubs. If you are staying in the region though, it would be shame not to take a walk around Corsica's hinterland. In fact, the north of Corsica has low hinterland, particularly in Niolo, between Porto and Corte; in Balagne, behind Calvi and Ile Rousse, but also in the extreme north (the Agriates desert near Saint-Florent and Cap Corse). Unjustly neglected, the region of the Costa Verde, behind Moriani, offers a wide range of attractions and activities which allow you to discover the authentic Corsica. You can participate in sports activities, such as hiking, where you can admire the stunning scenery and the picturesque villages, or else you can immerse yourself in the Corsican arts and culture and view the craft work here. All this is on the agenda for an enjoyable stay in the region; it is just surprising that it is ignored by tourists from the continent.

pros

  •  Some hotels are a quarter of an hour away from the city
  •  The benefits of a capital city: culture, shopping, airport, all within easy reach
  •  A stunning beach just 20 minutes away by car
  •  A large amount of hotels of varying quality

cons

  •  Like everywhere in Corsica, the cost of living is expensive
  •   There are not enough hotel rooms to accommodate everyone in the summer
  •  The beaches are not really very nice unless you venture at least 9 miles further out.
