Built in 20 BC on the banks of the Aisne, Augusta Suessionum is primarily known as being the Merovingian capital. The Soissonnais region, the land of white stone and limestone, is demarcated by the Ailette Valley to the north and the Retz Forest to the south. Heavily affected by World War I, the city centre was the subject of a reconstruction programme during the 20s, characterised by the Art-Deco style. Just an hour from Paris, the town is now very popular for its religious buildings which are typical of Picardian Gothic architecture, as well as its many peaceful parklands.
