Alfred Martel and Louis Armand Robert de Joly, early pioneers of speleology, discovered numerous sites in the region and put the Lozère on the speleological map.
They discovered important underground systems such as the Aven Armand and the Dargilan and made them accessible to the general public.
The Lozère region is carved out by 2 canyons, the Tarn and the Jonte Gorges, which mark the boundaries of the Causse Méjéan (arid high-plains that are part of the Causses Majeurs), and therefore has many different landscapes to offer and provides many opportunities to enjoy speleological adventures in ever-changing surroundings.
