St Germain-en-Laye

Our Editorial team's advice

The royal city of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, which was particularly significant from the 12th century onwards, witnessing the birth of Henri II, Charles IX and Louis XIV and playing host to most of the kings of France, seems to dominate the Ile-de-France region from atop its terraces. Beyond the pride of its chateau the city is more secretive and consists primarily of townhouses and small museums.
