The Aisne department is characterised by its varied landscapes, which change every 40 mi or so.
One fifth of the land is forested and the department boasts some 193 mi of navigable waterways. Its five regions each have their own distinctive landscape: the hedged farmland of the Thiérache region, the hills and mountains of the Laonnois region, the champagne vineyards of the Vallée de la Voile, the forests of the Soissonnais, and the canals and rivers of Saint-Quentinois.
