Bora Bora, French Polynesia Tahiti Bora Bora

Bora Bora epitomises all the fantasies of travellers in search of a paradise island. The reputation of the so-called "Pearl of the Pacific" is richly deserved. Indeed, the island offers one of the most striking ocean views you can imagine, and it is difficult to resist this absolutely incredible vision of endless blue that contrasts so markedly with the varied palette of green hues, which dress the jagged relief of the island.

Unfortunately, Bora Bora is now a well known destination and hotels are growing at a rather high pace there, most on the motus (islets) located on the outer belt of the island. Located to the west of Tahiti, Bora Bora whose name means 'first born' in Tahitian, is part of the archipelago.

Due to its small size, you will quickly go around the island by a small coastal road along which you can find some beautiful landscapes and here and remnants of maraes. However, Bora is primarily a destination for hotel stays and honeymoons.

pros

  •  Superb lagoon.
  •  High-quality hotels.
  •  Easy access (many air services).

cons

  •  The high tourist frequentation.
  •  The cost of hotel services (food, activities).

Visit Bora Bora

  • To see

The primary site of Bora Bora is its immense lagoon, hence the main activity is diving. You have to try both types, snorkelling and scuba diving. The first option is the easiest, just put on a pair of flippers and a mask (usually provided in hotels) and join the fish. For scuba diving, 5 clubs on the island offer boat trips for all levels of experience.

    To do

The range of the seaside activities offered is impressive with trips in semi-submersibles, submarines, catamaran tours, rides on the lagoon on any type of boat, rentals of motorboats as well as jet skiing and parasailing. As for land activities, many excursions are also available such as tours in a 4x4, on foot, on horseback and quad bike.

    To think about

Please note that the airport is situated on a motu located to the north. On the spot you can take a free shuttle that will take you to the port of Vaitape (west). If you have booked a hotel, it will handle transfers (for a fee).
  • To avoid

Avoid the rainy season, which spans from December to April (with the most precipitation in February).

    To try

Try the seafood, the marinated raw fish and the gourmet dishes with Polynesian and French influences. In Bora Bora, you can eat well, in a spectacular natural setting. Try the restaurants of the most famous hotels, and you will find, in addition to the flavours, the beautiful setting (with terraces overlooking the lagoon and intimate lighting in the evening) and good service. The only downside is that these paradise meals are quite expensive, especially if you order wine, which is imported and therefore more expensive than in the mainland.

    To bring back

Bring back some of the local gourmet products (jams of exotic fruits, vanilla) and paintings by local artists that can be found in charming art galleries. The islands are also known for their basketry and replicas of traditional wooden statues. For diehard fans of Polynesia: a tattoo.
