Paul Gauguin

Paul Gauguin Paul Gauguin You will find a few works by Gauguin in the Marquises, which are copied but are nevertheless valuable for their local inspiration. Ralph Braumer / age fotostock;

The painter arrived in Atuona in 1901, where he built his famous 'maison du Jouir' (house of pleasure) and lived out the last two years of his life. In Atuona, the Segalen-Gauguin museum is a tribute to the ?Polynesian memory', the source of inspiration of Gauguin and his friend, the writer Victor Segalen where you will be able to see petroglyphs, sculptures, costumes, music and dances, letters and memoirs. Outside, the 'House of Pleasure' was reconstructed and decorated with sculpted wood panels (the originals are in Paris at the Musée d'Orsay).
