Tahiti and its Islands Museum, set in a park by the sea, recounts the history of Polynesia and displays numerous ancient art objects, particularly a sensational collection of tikis. These sacred statuettes, carved in the shape of gods and with supernatural powers, were intended to ensure the protection of the temples (maraes). An excellent introduction to your exploration of the island, ask at your hotel for directions on how to get here. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30am to 5:30pm.
