Tahiti - Papeete

Tahiti - Papeete Tahiti - Papeete Papeete displays a successful blend of modernity and tradition without spoiling the overall image of the city. Carlos Rodrigues

The town of Papeete stretches between the sea banks and the foothills. If you want to explore it, start with a walk along the seafront (Pomare Boulevard) where the Perle Noire Museum stands opposite the Paofai temple. Then walk down the green and shady Bruat Avenue, it is one of Papeete's most beautiful main streets. On General de Gaulle Avenue, which will lead you into the town centre, stop and look at one of Papeete's oldest mansions: Queen Marau's house, Tahiti's last queen. Visit Notre-Dame de Papeete Cathedral (1856) and then stroll in the shopping streets, right from Notre-Dame square. Finally, make sure to go to the market; on the ground floor, you will find stalls displaying fish, local meat, Chinese specialities, flowers, tropical vegetables and fruits and upstairs you can find the handicraft items.
