Tahiti - The valleys and caves of Tahiti Nui Tahiti - The valleys and caves of Tahiti Nui A hike in Tahiti Nui's heavenly jungle will be well worth it for the sight of an extraordinary lake. © Vivianne Riviere

On Tahiti Nui's west coast, the valley of the Punaruu (ask at your hotel for details on how to get here) and the Orangers plateau provide the setting for a fantastic hike (allow a 4 hour walk to get to the plateau). The valley of the Vaihiria (again, ask at your hotel) leads to the lake of the same name, located at an altitude of 1,551 ft; vast and deep, it is surrounded by rocky walls as high as 2,300 ft. Another highlight on the west coast is Maraa natural caves; dug out of the rock, they are nicknamed the "true gates of Hell".
