The other Polynesian islands, French Polynesia Tahiti Bora Bora

Huahine is perhaps one of the most authentic islands of the archipelago. There are few cars, a peaceful rhythm of life and friendly people, the 'Woman Island' is certainly one of the most expensive in the heart of Polynesia. You will discover its beautiful landscapes, lush and exuberant vegetation, a true Garden of Eden where vanilla and pineapple grow.

You will discover the famous archaeological site of Maeva, a village that was the birthplace of eight chiefdoms of the island, hence the presence of royal ?marae'. Note that Huahine is the starting point each year in October for the largest canoe race across the South Pacific, the Hawaiki Nui Va'a.

Finally, Huahine is composed of two islands (Nui and Iti) connected by a bridge, offering, in addition to its magnificent hinterland, a very beautiful lagoon and two gorgeous beaches, one to the south of the peninsula, which faces the village of Maeva (to the east, the site of the former Sofitel hotel), the other also to the south, in Avea Bay.

pros

  •  The preserved nature.
  •  The spectacular diving sites.
  •  The Polynesian heritage (marae).

cons

  •  Few hotels on the islands.
  •  Few or no restaurants outside the hotels.

Visit The other Polynesian islands

  • To see

You will discover the famous archaeological site of Maeva, a village that was the birthplace of eight chiefdoms of the island, hence the presence of royal "Marae". Note that Huahine is the starting point each year in October for the largest canoe race across the South Pacific: the Hawaiki Nui Va'a.

    To do

In Raiatea, tours invite you to explore the beautiful views on the lagoon, of the Royal Marae of Taputapuatea, and vanilla plantations. Choices: 4x4 safaris in the mountains, walk along the lagoon, motor boat rentals, visit of pearl farms. And of course, scuba diving (Hemisphère Sub), to the numerous and rich sites for scuba diving.

    To think about

In Rangiroa, the lagoon passes allow you to perform ?drifting' dives, in other words, to be carried by the current to observe the many underwater species, which also use this kind of aquatic ?treadmill'. There are hammer sharks, grey sharks, reef sharks, manta rays and turtles. When you dive at the beginning of the pass, you can see the sea bottom without any problem, 180 ft below. Rangiroa is considered one of the best diving sites in the world.
  • To avoid

Avoid the rainy season, which spans from December to April (with most precipitation in February).

    To try

From a picnic on a desert motu to a gourmet dinner at a high-end restaurant, the islands offer various options for enjoying food and Polynesian flavours. You will have few choices on the other hand, outside the hotels, especially on the smaller islands

    To bring back

Bring back some of the local gourmet products (jams of exotic fruits, vanilla) and paintings by local artists that can be found in charming art galleries. The islands are also known for their basketry and replicas of traditional wooden statues. For diehard fans of Polynesia: a tattoo.

In the footsteps of the great explorers

White sand, turquoise water, languid coconut palms close to the shore: Polynesia offers this picture postcard image from one archipelago to another on many of its islands. The destination is actually almost as mountainous
