The vegetation

The vegetation

The vegetation Vegetation The fact that Polynesia is volcanic means it is perfect for plants, and they thrive in its particularly fertile soils. It is home to vast numbers of fruit trees and tropical plants. © Ariel Fuchs

The vegetation is exceptional on all the islands. Here are some of the highlights: on Ua Pu, the road leads to Hohoi bay, which provides a beautiful introduction to Marquesan plant species. You will see beef wood, purau, tau, miro, mape (Pacific chestnut), teak, mahogany, banyan (wild fig originally from India), acacia, flamboyant, wild mango, passiflora (passion fruit tree), kapok and giant clematis vines, the list goes on. On Ua Huka, the botanical garden of Vaipaee, which boasts a remarkable collection of palm trees, displays many tropical plants used by man such as bamboo, coffee, mangosteen, walnut, avocado, fruit trees, tiare maori, ylang-ylang and vanilla.
