The traditional art of making Fang masks is closely linked to mortuary rituals. The creation of the mask as well as the choice of wood is supervised by a priest. Once finished, the mask endowed with mystical powers becomes the expression of the spirits. Artists like Picasso or Matisse were greatly influenced by this type of art, although this practice is unfortunately fading away. As for wooden sculptures, they represent equivocal sensual human bodies.
