Gambia is rich in musical artistic tradition. For centuries, musicians and singers have kept the history and identity of their people, through tales sung by families and clans. A lot of singers are also accompanied by a musician playing a kora, an instrument that looks like a harp. Its role in society is very important. Mandenka people are masters in the fabrication of this instrument.
Playing the kora is a custom in the Mandingue cultures. This instrument is played by "Western" Mandingues (Mandinka) in Gambia, Senegal and Guinea Bissau.
A brief history: The kora comes from an old tradition dating back several centuries and was played in the kings' courtyards where marabous and musicians were part of the staff.
